 Objectives of the Network
Objective:
The twin imperatives of sustainability and global competitiveness involves fundamental changes to how we live, work, consume and how we organise our communities. In this sense, achieving sustainability in tropical built environments dictates that cities, communities and individuals: • Touch more lightly on the environment and protect biodiversity • Develop a shared understanding of practical sustainability for the tropics. • Apply tropical sustainable principles to the urban, rural and regional built environments • Generate new understanding through integrated research, action learning and practically focused partnerships • Develop systems and processes for the wide and timely dissemination off best practice standards, guidelines and examples • Develop opportunities for business, employment and growth for Far North Queensland
In order to progress the achievement of this objective we will, as a network:- • Meet regularly to maintain the dialogue and plan actions which further our primary objective. • Encourage participation in the network by all stakeholders, including builders, construction service professionals, building material manufacturers, retailers, government representatives, industry and community associations and members of our community. We acknowledge that diverse perspectives, motivations and experiences are vital to the creative solutions we hope to achieve and implement. • Engage with the broader community on practical issues of concern with an underlying interest in informing and encouraging the uptake of green design, building, materials and services. • Remain informed ourselves by sharing learning and information which enhances our ability as individuals and as organisations to maintain our own commitment to sustainable building practice. • Work collaboratively with related organisations including FNQ Regional Sustainable Framework, Centre of Excellence in Tropical Design (CETD), Cairns City Council Urban Design Advisory Board, Housing Industry Association (HIA), Australian Green Development Forum (AGDF) and others on the understanding that we have no desire to duplicate their work but wish to support and inform their efforts • When requested, feed our principles and experience into law and policy reform agendas aimed at enhancing sustainability particularly in tropical environments. • Operate as a democratic, respectful, open and accountable body of professionals.
