Descriptions of the qualities of building materials and construction services that are considered 'Green' are listed below. It is our expectation that products and services advertised on Greenbuild.com.au have at least one of the qualities described in each category description.

Advertisements must be for materials, products and services that are available for sale or supply by businesses, distributors, wholeslaers and retailers that are based in North Queensland as detailed by the regions search and map on the 'Search' page of Greenbuild.

The list is by no means limited to these descriptions. Please contact us if you are not sure about your product or service and whether or not it meets our standards. Please contact us if you think that the descriptions require further clarification or definition.

  

Materials

Appliances/ Whitegoods Accredited by the government Energy Labelling System with a minimum of 4 stars. All water appliances to have a minimum WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme) 4 star rating.
Balustrades Timber that has been sourced from Forest Stewardship Certified timbers and reclaimed or recycled timbers. No PVC products. Australian manufactured uPVC that is free of heavy metals is acceptable. Alternative products may include manufacture from halogen free UV strengthened polyethylene (HDPE, MDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, XLPE), Polypropylene, Polybutylene, Stainless Steel. Also refer to blocks and concrete.
Bathrooms/ Laundries All water fittings including taps and toilets to have a minimum WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme) 4 star rating. Toilets must dual flush and a maximum capacity of 6 litres. Fittings not eligible for the rating must have significant water savings compared to other industry standard products. No PVC products. Australian manufactured uPVC that is free of heavy metals is acceptable. Alternative products may include manufacture from halogen free UV strengthened polyethylene (HDPE, MDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, XLPE), Polypropylene, Polybutylene, Vitrified Clay (VC), Stainless Steel. Composting toilets and worm septic systems acceptable. Timber that has been sourced from Forest Stewardship Certified timbers and reclaimed or recycled timbers. Brick/ blocks that have, by industry standards, a much lower embodied energy through the manufacturing process. Blocks and bricks that include polystyrene other products for inbuilt insulation, lightness and less embodied energy. Brick/ block building systems that provide insulation to a standard that is higher than the Queensland Development and Building Codes. Certified with Good Environmental Choice - Australia. ISO 140001 Environmental Management System certified.
Buildings/ Kit/ Portable All re-usable buildings are acceptable. Buildings and construction processes that protects the natural landscape, siting engages passive solar design, sustainable materials and water and energy saving systems. Energy Efficiency Performance that exceeds the performance criteria applicable for Queensland Development and Australian Building Codes. Timber that has been sourced from Forest Stewardship Certified timbers and reclaimed or recycled timbers. Fittings, fixtures and finishes meet the criteria described in the other pertinent categories in this list i.e. paint, cabinetry, plumbing and the like.

Cladding/ Sheeting Manufactured using a minimum of 50% of recycled material. Recycled or second-hand. Timber sourced from Forest Stewardship Certified timbers. Radially sawn timber sourced from plantation forests. Substantially lower embodied energies than standard industry products. Exceptionally good inherent insulating qualities. Manufactured from natural fibres. Very low to no use of formaldehyde, petrochemical products, toxins and chemicals or off-gassing VOC's from glues. Certified with Good Environmental Choice - Australia.
Cement/ Concrete A minimum of 20% recycled waste product including fly-ash, saw dust or crushed concrete. By industry standards, use of additives that are less toxic. Manufactured using less energy than normal industry standards. Installation using less energy than normal industry standards.
Cooling/ Ventilation Products that are more energy efficient than standard industry products. Certified with Good Environmental Choice - Australia. ISO 140001 Environmental Management System certified.
Doors/ Windows A minimum Window Energy Rating Scheme (WERS) of 3 stars. No PVC framing. Wood products that has been sourced from Forest Stewardship Certified timbers and reclaimed or recycled timbers. Certified with Good Environmental Choice - Australia. ISO 140001 Environmental Management System certified. Finishes including paints and varnishes that have minimal or no petrochemical additives, manufactured from clay or plant based products, low or no off gassing of VOC's. Fasteners, caulking and adhesive products that have less toxins or chemicals than other industry standard products with a reduced level of VOC emissions.
Electrical Lighting units and lighting that is highly energy efficient with fluorescent globes or LED lights. Photovoltaic units and systems acceptable. Halogen free cables that do not contain PVC or any other organo-chlorine based chemicals are acceptable. Alternative cables to PVC may include polyethylene and rubber as insulation and sheathing material. Polyolefin Plastics as alternatives for electricity cables. Alternatives for telephone and data cables may include Envirolex or Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XPLE), Pyrolex, aerial and underground XPLE, Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR), Acrylonitrile Rubber, Medium-Density Polyethylene (MDPE), Thermal Plastic Rubber (TPR) and Polybutylene. Products that provide solutions for rogue electromagnetic fields and work towards minimising the build-up of the fields that cause exposure to non-iodising radiation. Furniture Products that are manufactured with at least 50% of recycled material, or processed from raw or certified organic natural fibres, reclaimed or second hand and free from petrochemical products, dyes and finishes, VOC's and pesticide residues. Wood products that has been sourced from Forest Stewardship Certified timbers and reclaimed or recycled timbers. Paints and finishes that are plant based and do not contain petrochemical additives. Glass A minimum Window Energy Rating Scheme (WERS) of 3 stars. Reclaimed or recycled glass from demolition. Low emittance coatings or low 'e' glass and similar performance additives to glass that lowers solar load. Glass product specified better than industry standard for energy efficiency performance through double glazing systems and seals. No PVC framing. Wood products that has been sourced from Forest Stewardship Certified timbers and reclaimed or recycled timbers. Certified with Good Environmental Choice - Australia. ISO 140001 Environmental Management System certified.
Hot Water Systems See Energy systems and Water/ Water Systems
Insulation/ Acoustics Insulation that is manufactured using materials that may be recycled and or uses greater than 75% recycled material. Insulation that has a reduced level of toxins by industry standards with a low or zero release of Formaldehyde or VOC's. Insulation that is not a health risk to handle. Certified with Good Environmental Choice - Australia. Insulating paints must not emit VOC's or Petro Chemical off-gasses.
Kitchens Timber that has been sourced from Forest Stewardship Certified timbers and reclaimed or recycled timbers. MDF board (medium density fibreboard), particleboard or chipboard that does not use urea formaldehyde or has reduced formaldehyde emissions. Low formaldehyde products (using non-formaldehyde binders) are preferred. Products that have a minimal use of synthetic glues and use glues that are water based. Stainless steel, fibre cement, brickwork, polished granite and glass are preferred products. Paints and finishes that are plant based and do not contain petrochemical additives. Appliances that are accredited by the government Energy Labelling System with a minimum of 4 stars. Water appliances to have a minimum WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme) 4 star rating. Landscapes/ Gardens Paving that is permeable minimising rainwater runoff, manufactured using a minium of 50% recycled material. Materials and product that have less toxins and chemicals than those used in standard industry practise. No chemical based fertilisers or pesticides. Timber that has been sourced from Forest Stewardship Certified timbers and reclaimed or recycled timbers. Composting systems and worm and worm farms. No PVC products. Australian manufactured uPVC that is free of heavy metals is acceptable. Alternative products may include manufacture from halogen free UV strengthened polyethylene (HDPE, MDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, XLPE), Polypropylene, Polybutylene, Vitrified Clay (VC), Stainless Steel. No PVC in waterproofing membranes or toxic adhesive fixings.
Lighting Lighting units and lighting that is highly energy efficient with fluorescent globes or LED lights. Skylights have insulating and heat transfer reducing properties and manufactured using recycled materials.
Machinery Machinery that is used in association with building and uses significantly less energy and or emits significantly less greenhouse gases than standard industry products. Machinery that assists in the processing of waste for recycling. Machinery that uses fuel that is bio-diesel, ethanol or processed cooking oil. Machinery hiring and supply services provide carbon offset programs.
Paints/ Finishes Minimal or no petrochemical additives, manufactured from clay or plant based products, low or no off-gassing of VOC's.
Patios/ Awnings Timber that has been sourced from Forest Stewardship Certified timbers and reclaimed or recycled timbers. NO PVC products. Paint or finishes with minimal or no petrochemical additives, manufactured from clay or plant based products, low or no off-gassing of VOC's.
Pest Control Products and treatments are to be biodegradable and manufactured from natural chemicals or certified organic pest control products or physical barrier systems.
Pipes/ Conduits NO PVC products. Australian manufactured uPVC that is free of heavy metals is acceptable. Alternative products may include manufacture from halogen free UV strengthened polyethylene (HDPE, MDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, XLPE), Polypropylene, Polybutylene, Vitrified Clay (VC), Stainless Steel.
Plumbing/ Guttering All water fittings including taps and toilets to have a minimum WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme) 4 star rating. Water/ Water Systems Solar heating products or systems that allow exceptional energy savings compared to standard industry products. Water collection and distribution systems that allow exceptional water conservation compared to standard industry products including grey water and irrigation systems. All water treatment and treatment products are non-toxic and fully disclosed. No PVC products. Alternative products may include manufacture from halogen free UV strengthened polyethylene (HDPE, MDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, XLPE), Polypropylene, Polybutylene, Vitrified Clay (VC), Stainless Steel. Banks and Financial Institutions that have a good score with the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Reputex, or funds accredited with the Socially responsible Investment (SRI) symbol by the Ethical Investment Association (EIA).
Block/ Brick Layers Actively engage in the use of recycled or seconds bricks/ blocks or newly manufactured bricks or blocks that have a recycled content. Use brick/ blocks that have, by industry standards, a much lower embodied energy through the manufacturing process. Use of mortars and grouts that have reduced toxic additives. Employ brick/ block building systems that provide insulation to a standard that is higher than the Queensland Development and Building Codes.
Building Consultancy Evidence that the consultancy recommends building processes that protects the natural land, engages systems that are energy and water efficient and provides advice on alternative materials that has reduced levels of toxins and chemicals by industry standards. Energy Efficiency Performance that exceeds the performance criteria applicable for Queensland Development and Australian Building Codes. An active participation in training and accreditation in courses such as those provided through the HIA Greensmart programme. Membership of the Green Building Council of Australia, Australian Green Development Forum or other organisation with similar credentials. Use of low VOC MDF board (medium density fibreboard), particleboard or chipboard. Low formaldehyde products (using non-formaldehyde binders) are preferred.
Concretors Evidence of use of concrete that has a minimum of 20% recycled waste product including fly-ash, saw dust or crushed concrete. By industry standards, use of additives that are less toxic and has been manufactured using less energy. Actively engage in the recycling of concrete from demolition. Use of concrete that that is manufactured using less energy than normal industry standards. Installation of concrete and cement that uses less energy than normal industry standards.

Cleaners Evidence of use of cleaning agents that are not hazardous to human health and damaging to the environment. Cleaning fabrics and materials sourced from re-cycled materials.
Developers Evidence that projects protects the natural landscape, engages passive solar design, sustainable materials specification and water and energy saving systems. Energy Efficiency Performance must exceed the performance criteria applicable for Queensland Development and Australian Building Codes. Actively recycles left over site building materials. ISO 140001 Environmental Management System certified. Green Star Certification for commercial building projects. Membership of the Green Building Council of Australia, Australian Green Development Forum or other organisation with similar credentials. Training providers
The majority of the provider's curriculum is to be dedicated to environmental sciences, sustainability, issues and provide qualifications relating to the built environment.
Electricians Electricians that have an understanding of their role in relation to Environmental & Public Health and provide their customers with up to date information and advice on the latest technology and energy saving appliances; cost savings (short term and long term cost comparisons and environmental benefits); practical appliance and installation knowledge. Installation of lighting units and lighting that is highly energy efficient with fluorescent globes or LED lights. Use of halogen-free cables that do not contain PVC or any other organo-chlorine based chemicals. Alternative cables may include polyethylene and rubber as insulation and sheathing material. Polyolefin Plastics as alternatives for electricity cables. Evidence that the service specialises in renewable energy uses as their primary area of consulting. Energy ratings produced by designed computer software and Energy performance' Deemed to Satisfy' reporting for the building certification process should also include information on areas where performance can be improved and exceed the performance criteria applicable for Queensland Development and Australian Building Codes for the North Queensland region.

Manufacture, installation or sale of energy and power that is monitored by the Office of Renewable Energy Regulator and is 100% generated from solar, wind, waste material, micro hydro, renewable bio products or offset by forest planting projects. Government departments, Statutory Authorities, Private Enterprise, and Industry Organisations that have their core business is the abatement of greenhouse gas, climate change issues and the greening of the energy resources industries.
Engineering Evidence that the consultancy recommends building processes that protects the natural land, engages systems that are energy and water efficient and provides advice on alternative materials that has reduced levels of toxins and chemicals by industry standards. Provide direct services that enhance energy efficiency performance that exceeds the performance criteria applicable for Queensland Development and Australian Building Codes. Evidence of active participation in CPD, training and accreditation in seminars and courses such as those provided by their professional associations, the HIA Greensmart programme. Plumbers Members of Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia (MPMSAA) Green Plumbers that have an understanding of their role in relation to Environmental & Public Health and provide their customers with up to date information and advice on the latest technology and energy saving appliances; practical appliance and installation knowledge; environmental impacts of plumbing services; energy/water/cost savings (short term and long term cost comparisons and environmental benefits).
